Make or Break your Habits – SWITCH – 3rd of a 5 part series

Within this blog I will go over SWITCH.  This is changing negative thoughts to positive ones as the next step to creating or breaking habits.  If you missed the first two blogs, check them out: 1st: Make or Break Habits – WHY and  2nd: Make or Break Habits – PLAN.

Ok, so let’s move on to the 3rd step – SWITCH.  Someone might ask, “What has this got to do with habits?”  Actually, it has a lot to do with habits.  It comes down to mind over matter (please forgive the cliché).  Whenever we begin anything new, there are bound to be times in which we feel overwhelmed or just not “feeling it” and slip off track.  This happens and it’s OK.  Here is where the SWITCH comes in.  We must be aware of the self-sabotage and turn it around.  The beautiful part is it’s a choice.  Go back and remember your WHY.  If remembering your WHY isn’t enough, we must change it to what truly resonates.  For the sake of this exercise, let’s say your WHY is big enough.  Remind yourself, PLAN (2nd step to creating and breaking habits) and then make sure you are mindful of your negative thoughts and SWITCH your thinking.  E.g. “I’m so tired today, I just don’t have it in me to make my lunch to bring to work tomorrow, and perhaps just this once I will order out and get back on track tomorrow.”  Realize it really only takes a few minutes to put together a meal but more importantly, know you will feel better about yourself if you put forth the effort.  If it were a matter of life and death, would you take the time?  Of course you would.

Change doesn’t happen overnight and requires repetition to become a habit.  Know it will take time.  Know you are worth the effort!!  Trust me; it will get to a point where it won’t even be a consideration to order out for lunch.  If you can’t be your own support system, get an accountability partner.  Added support is critical.  Maybe you can ask a friend to take this journey with you.  Tell your family so they can assist on days you are absolutely exhausted.  Whatever works.

You see, I cook my children breakfast every morning.  They bring their own lunch to school every day.  It’s never a consideration for them to get the school lunch because I didn’t take the few minutes to send them off with a healthy meal.  Did it happen overnight?  No.  Once I knew better, I did better.  It’s just the way it is as part of my routine.  How is it we find it so easy to talk ourselves out of things but we don’t think about how easily we can talk ourselves into things.

Your mind is very powerful.  Realizing when you start to circle the drain of negativity and pick yourself up!  It’s ALL up to you.

By switching your thoughts can make all the difference in the world.  It’s free and you don’t have to break a sweat for it to happen.

Think positive!

Be Well!
